Shanghai eating

Shanghai’s cuisine is definitely not one of the most famous or most popular Chinese cuisines. The reason for this may be the fact that Shanghai has often been under strong Western influence, so this city did not develop particularly distinctive cuisine as the rest of China. Shanghai cuisine is created mainly as a combination of the surrounding regional cuisines, and even some western cuisines. However, there are some of its characteristics, such as; Shanghai’s dishes are mainly made of seafood and meat (usually pork), and the use of sugar, oil and soy sauce is also quite typical in this regard.

Like all cosmopolitan cities, Shanghai is full of many restaurants and snacks points for every budget. The restaurants with all regional Chinese cuisines, as well as international, mainly western, restaurants may be found in this city.

The fact that Shanghai is not particularly known for its own cuisine does not mean that here you cannot eat some unique dishes. On the contrary, there are a few dishes that Shanghai is famous for.

Above many specific dishes, Xiǎo lóng bāo (小笼包) is maybe the most famous and most often eaten. It is a dumpling carefully filled with meat, ginger and soup, and in order not to burn your tongue, first bit a little hole to allow the steam get out so you may safely eat it. Shēng jiān bāo (生煎包) is also one of those specific meals that you have to try while in Shanghai. For lovers of crispy food, these dough buns, which are carefully fried in pan, are the best choice, especially because they are also filled with meat. The next recommended meal is Shànghǎi máo xiè (上海毛蟹), which is simply a hairy crab. The meal is particularly popular during the winter. Dà zhá xiè (大闸蟹) is also very popular, again crab, but this time the one that can be found in rivers. It is usually consumed with vinegar, and though there is nothing additional, it tastes delicious. The last but not the least recommended is Qīng chǎo shàn hú (清炒鳝糊), stir-fried eels with many additional sauces, such as soybean, ginger, starch and of course, sugar.

Shanghai is known for several food streets where you can find many small, mostly family-run, restaurants, offering traditional food at affordable prices. In addition, there are some Shanghai and western fast food chains, but the locals are definitely more recommended. Food streets are mainly found around People’s Square and the Old Town. Near People’s Square there are Wujiang Road and Huanghe Road, and in the Old Town street food you can eat in the area around Shanghai Town God’s Temple and Yunnan. Wujiang Road (吴江路; Wú Jiāng Lù) is usually popular for the variety of snacks that it offers, but besides it, there are many Chinese and western restaurants with various choices. The prices here are usually quite affordable, which is convenient for both; locals and tourists. Along with it, Huanghe Road (黄河路; Huáng Hé Lù) is also famous for its choice and prices as well. Seafood and local dishes are the main thing that many people come here and choose this area for lunch or dinner. Area around Shanghai Town God’s Temple (上海城隍庙; Shànghǎi Chénghuángmiào), known also as Old City God Temple Snack Street (老城隍庙小吃街; lǎo chéng huáng miào xiǎo chī jiē) justifies its name as the “kingdom of snack”, since it offers number of various snacks. Among the most famous, there are Steamed Stuffed Buns, Fried Stuffed Buns, Vegetable Stuffed Buns, Cream Spiced Beans, and many more. The architecture of the place is also quite interesting, since everything is in the style of Ming and Qing dynasty. Eventually, Yunnan South Road (云南南路; Yún Nán Nán Lù) is a quite traditional area, where it is really hard to find western restaurants, since Shanghai and Sichuan cuisine dominate around. This can be quite good for locals who don’t like to experiment with their food, but also for tourists who are eager to taste something quite typical and traditional.

Areas around The Bund and French Concession are full of restaurants in different price ranges, and the choice of different cuisines is quite big, so you may find; Chinese, Italian, French, Spanish, Japanese, Thai and many more.
