Transportation between Shanghai and Hong Kong

Air
Flight distance between Shanghai and Hong Kong is near 1,230km (764mi), and flight time is about 2.5 hours. There are more than 100 direct flights (in one way) daily. Departures are between 7:15 and 21:45 on every 15 minutes. Return flight usually cost from 1,000 to 1,300CNY (economy class).

Train
Train is also very popular mean of transportation between Shanghai and Hong Kong. You can take either overnight or high-speed daily train.

Overnight trains are most popular, because they are comfortable, direct, reliable, fast, and cheap. It is sleeper train and you can save money for hotel bill. Travel time is about 20 hours, and tickets are CNY1,040/627/408. Drawback is the fact that they departure on every second day.

High-speed trains shorten trip to about 12 hours in total. They departure daily, but these are not direct trains, and you will have to make stop in Guangzhou. High-speed trains are not so cheap, because tickets cost CNY2,416/954 without metro or taxi ride between train stations in Guangzhou. It is day time trip and basically you will have to spend all day in train. Even if it is high-speed train, it is still 12 hours trip without sleeper berths, so it is not as comfortable as overnight train is.

Overnight trains (SH to HK train number Z99; HK to SH train number Z100; about 20 hours travel time) operate between Shanghai Railway Station (上海火车站; departure at 18:02 on odd dates in January, April, May, August, November, December, and on even dates in February, March, June, July, September, October) and Hung Hom Station in Kowloon Hong Kong ( 紅磡站; departure at 15:15 on even dates in January, April, May, August, November, December, and on odd dates in February, March, June, July, September, October). You can take deluxe sleeper (CNY1,040/HK$1,039), soft sleeper (CNY627/HK$825) or hard sleeper (CNY408/HK$519). All sleeper berths in this train are recommended.

High-speed trains operates daily on Shanghai-Guangzhou-Hong Kong route.

Shanghai-Hong Kong: from Shanghai Hongqiao to Guangzhou South you can take either train number G85 which travel from 8:00 to 14:51, or train number G1301 which travel from 10:28 to 19:03. You can choose between superior (or business), 1st (CNY1,305) and 2nd (CNY797) class seats.

From Guangzhou South to Guangzhou East you will have to take metro (about 1.5 hours) or taxi (about 45 minutes).

From Guangzhou East to Hung Hom Station in Kowloon Hong Kong trains operate (HK$190; travel time is about 2 hours) on every hour or more.

Hong Kong-Shanghai: from Hung Hom Station in Kowloon Hong Kong to Guangzhou East trains operate (HK$190 1st/second class; travel time is about 2 hours) on every hour or more. For time efficient trip take train departing Hung Hom at 9:24 or 11:32.

From Guangzhou East to Guangzhou South you will have to take metro (about 1.5 hours) or taxi (about 45 minutes).

From Guangzhou South to Shanghai Hongqiao you can take either train number G1304 which travel from 13:35 to 21:58, or train number G1306 which travel from 15:39 to 22:53. You can choose between superior (or business), 1st (CNY1,305) and 2nd (CNY797) class seats.
